Panu Savolainen: Don't demolish!

ARCHITECTURE IN THE TURMOIL OF THE DEMOLITION WAVE

Sat 5.8. 13:30-14:30

In the 2020s, Finland is living in the midst of a wave of demolition. Demolitions are already taking place at a faster pace than in the 1960s, and now very young buildings, only a few decades old, are the target of the demolition wave. The Finland of modern architecture is rapidly disappearing. Preserving the built environment will make a major contribution to a sustainable and carbon-neutral society. The question of maintaining, renovating and demolishing the building stock of the 1960s and beyond, and preserving the modern architectural heritage, is a pressing one.

The ModerninArvo project, funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and running from 2021-2022, examined the problems and consequences of the demolition wave among experts from many different fields. A short documentary film about the project will be screened and the values and future of Modern Architecture will be discussed.
