This year's silent film is Ukrainian-born Oleksandr Dovzhenko's classic film Earth (Земля, 1930).
Tiheäsalo and Yli-Tepsa use electric guitar, double bass and violin to build slowly maturing themes and broad sounds. Electricity and experimentalism are also starting points. Here and there you might hear remnants of something that refers to folk music.
Hermanni Yli-Tepsa
Aikuisen viha, Stara Zagora, Boris Morgana, Vallankäytön välineet, Horst Quartet, Chirps, Jousitus, FISQ, Kerttu, Ensemble Touristique, Svamp, Radiofiskars Orchestra, Media Luna, Aaveet, Midnight Sun Eclipser, Hilma Glad, Luiro, Hete, Two Who, Pidot… musicians who reach larger audiences or who work on the fringes or periphery of the field of high-culture music can have a varied career, with a variety of projects, whether shorter or longer, less well known but by no means insignificant. Fiskars-based violinist and double bass player Hermanni Yli-Tepsa (b. 1979) has also made his mark on many grassroots music and sound art projects.
Hermanni started his film hobby in the early 90's by collecting bottles at the Sodankylä Film Festival. In recent years, through collaborations with Laura Naukkarinen and Topias Tiheäsalo (Lau Nau & Seitsemäs taivas), he has also become familiar with scoring silent films and playing film music.
Topias Tiheäsalo
Topias Tiheäsalo is a Turku-based guitarist who plays improvised music in various forms. Some of his playing can be described as experimental music or free improvisation, others as free-jazz, witch, or the art of sound. As a musician, he is above all interested in playing.
Tiheäsalo has long been making arrangements for feature films, both solo and in various ensembles. In recent years he has accompanied old films, above all in the Seventh Heaven ensemble together with Laura Naukkarinen and Hermanni Ylitepsa. Tiheäsalo has performed as an accompanist at the Loud Silents festival, the Sodankylä Film Festival, the Oulu Festival week and numerous KAVI screenings in Turku and Helsinki.
Tiheäsalo also plays in the bands of Pekka Laine and Lau Nau, makes film music, presents a live experimental film with Pauliina Mäkelä under the name Kultapalmut, makes music programmes for Yle Radio 1, plays and watches football, cycles and spends as much time outdoors as possible in this part of the world.
