Saddam Jumaily - Photopresentation

FRI 4.8.

Iraqi-born artist Saddam Jumaily was a teacher at the Iraqi Academy of Fine Arts, but the country's religious fundamentalism has driven him into exile.

At Festival Norpas, Jumaily will show his images and talk about his series Just a name, which deals with the sensitive issue of ethnic and religious discrimination he has faced because of his name.

"Many people have asked me to change my name because it is the same as the name of the former dictator of Iraq. I have faced discrimination because of my name, both inside and outside Iraq," said Jumaily.

In his work, Jumaily equates himself with Saddam Hussein, who faces his doom in news pictures. The pain of prejudice and discrimination is the starting point for the works.
