Norpas will bring a different kind of glimpse of Russia to Taalintehdas again this year. There will be a peek at new experimental short films from across the vast neighbouring country, as well as a discussion on how alternative culture lives beyond the eastern border today and what kind of cultural collaboration can take place in these circumstances.

Vnutri 

Experimental short films from across Russia

Vnutri is a new Russian experimental short film festival concept, run by film researchers and filmmakers from all over Russia. The Vnutri festival will present short experimental films from all over Russia, mostly made by amateur filmmakers, collected through an extensive open call for submissions. The festival's curators describe the genre of the films as "internal cinema", which ignores the film market, formal training or the finer points of expensive technology. This film can be inspired by footage shot with a camera found at a flea market, family albums and a passion for creativity. Norpas will show a curated collection of short films from the festival, which strongly highlights the vastness and multiculturalism of Russia. These experimental films offer a unique, sometimes strange and confusing, sometimes exhilarating and exasperating view from inside Russia, from its most diverse corners. What kind of experimental, low-threshold cinema comes from Udmurtia or Vladivostok?

Views on civil society and cultural life

Kerttu Matinpuro 

The Norpas Festival has long engaged in critical cultural cooperation across the Eastern border, with the core idea that complex culture offers different realities and alternative ways of thinking about the future, as well as new ways of looking at the world around us. Now, the brutal war of invasion launched by Russia has torn a deep rift in cultural cooperation between the countries. What kind of cultural exchanges can take place at this time, whether it is relevant at all, and if so, why? 

Keskustelua vetää Venäjällä kahdeksan vuotta asunut tuottaja, toimittaja ja elokuvaohjaaja, Norpas-festivaalin pitkäaikainen ystävä Kerttu Matinpuro. Matinpuron mielestä Venäjä (kuten kaikki muutkin maat) tulisi aina nähdä myös valtaeliitistään erillisenä kulttuurien ja monenlaisten ihmisten tilkkutäkkinä. Venäjän nykyhallinto tekee kaikkensa puristaakseen maan kansalaiset yhteen patrioottiseen muottiin – mutta siinä se ei ole onnistunut, eikä tule koskaan onnistumaan. On tärkeää, että ymmärrämme katsoa Venäjää myös tuon ahtaan muotin ulkopuolella.

Keskustelemassa mukana venäläisen VNUTRI-elokuvafestivaalin kuraattori, kulttuurituottaja ja dokumenttielokuvaohjaaja Svetlana Bogdanovskaja, sekä Venäjällä paljon kulkenut sarjakuvataiteilija Sanna Hukkanen, jonka uusin, suomalais-ugrilaisten kansojen maille sijoittuva dokumentaarinen sarjakuvateos ilmestyy myöhemmin syksyllä.
